Do I need a licence for an air rifle?
An air rifle needs to be licensed, like any other firearm. It is a common misconception that it doesn't, as one is not needed to the UK. But an air rifle is treated like any other firearm in Ireland, as regards licencing. The licence costs the same as any other licence, i.e. €80 for three years. Should I buy an air rifle or a rifle?
An air rifle is ideal for beginners or people who are not fully comfortable with using a .22 or .17HMR rifle. Our air rifle customers range from the target shooting enthusiasts to people who have vermin problems inside sheds, e.g. pigeons and rats. The air rifle is ideal for this type of shooting as a normal rifle’s bullet will penetrate galvanised sheeting. The air rifle is a much safer option for this.
An air rifle can be bought spring loaded or gas powered. Generally the more powerful air rifles are the gas powered rifles.
How long does it take to get a firearms licence?
There is no definitive answer to this question. If it is your first licence then it will take longer as background checks and other clearances need to be done. You can read about applying for a firearms license in our step-by-step guide.

I am applying for a substitute firearms license / second firearms license, how long will it take?
If it is a substitution licence, the waiting time should be shorter than a first timer’s application. You are just changing the firearm details on the licence so the waiting period should always be shorter. This is also the case with a second licence.
Is the Gun Store open on Saturdays?
Yes, we're open from 8am to 6pm Monday to Saturday.
Unfortunately, for insurance reasons we cannot meet customers at the premises outside these designated times, no exceptions can be made.
Do I need gun safe?
Yes, anyone purchasing a firearm will need a
gun safe. As the number of firearms licensed by the owner increases, certain home security criteria have to be followed. These will be outlined by your local firearm officer.

How often do I need to clean my gun?
Generally, this depends on the frequency of use and what the calibre/gauge of the rifle/shotgun is. A full clean should be done every three to four times of using your firearm. A small amount of regular cleaning will help keep your gun protected against rust and will save you a big job in the future. Check out our

Do RED MILLS take trade-ins?
Yes, we do take trade-ins. However, we do not give a value on a trade-in over the phone. The firearm has to be examined in the shop by one of staff before a value can be given. The value will then be taken off the price of the firearm that is being purchased.
Do you buy firearms straight off the public?
No, we do not buy firearms directly off the public. However, we decommission and destruct firearms. There is a decommissioning fee depending on the amount of work needed.
